Biography

Early Life, Roman Military & Nova Terran Police Force

di Sala Serana was born on the 17th of Imlotel, 192, in Sinaero (Renamed by New Rome to Civitas Murata), the capital of Sinitola, which was at that time an occupied colony of the New Roman Republic (NRR). Although, as many Sinitolans did, di Sala Serana resented the occupation of the NRR, she believed that the best way to change the situation was to work with what already existed. With that ideology, she entered the New Roman Military at the age of 18, with the intention of becoming the Nova Terran Governor, a lofty goal considering no Governor had ever been Female or from a region besides Nova Italia (let alone both). She progressed through the Roman Military at an advanced Rate, becoming an ensign after just over a year in the force. She receiver her first role as an officer in 203, two years later, becoming a Tribuni angusticlavii of the 18th New Roman Legion. However, there she found herself stuck. Although she clearly fit and exceeded the qualifications to progress further, she was continually passed over in favour of less experienced, male, Iselian colleagues. Between the years of 203 and 210, Di Sala Serana continually proved her worth on all metrics, eventually becoming ranked as the most capable strategist in the entire NRR Military based off their own metrics & tests. However, she could not progress through the military hierarchy. Finally, tired by the Iselian racism and NRR Military sexism, she resigned from the New Roman Military in 210, and returned to Sinitola. There she joined the Sinaero Police Force, serving as a Automatic Firearms Qualified Responder (In provincial Police Forces, not all officers were qualified to use firearms besides a simple side arm. Therefore, certain Officers, usually Iselians or former Military Servicepersons, acted as Automatic Firearms Qualified Responders, who attended every confrontation where firearms were suspected to be in the possession of the suspects) and quickly rose through the ranks, as those in power in Sinitola realised her value, intelligence, and skill, rising all the way to the highest position in the Nova Terran Police Force, the Co-Superintendent, in just 5 years. Over the following 5 years, di Sala Serana served as the Co-Superintendent, and was privately grateful to finally have those around her who finally recognised her abilities, most notable Consular Commissioner of Nova Terran Police and Military Operations, Aurripos Puiso Sylviana, who she developed a close relationship with over that period.

Nova Terran Crisis

In 220, the New Roman Senate announced a tax rate rise on all provincial subjects, raising taxes from an average of 12 % of annual income to an astounding 45 %, effective immediately. All across the New Roman provinces, protests erupted, which were brutally shut down by Police and Military Forces. However, in Nova Terra, the situation played out drastically different, as Sylviana issued a press release to the Nova Terran public, declaring that he would not deploy police forces to break up the protests provided that they remained peaceful, an unusual response considering that Roman Provincial Law prohibited any expression of dissatisfaction against the New Roman Government. Legal experts regarded this as within his rights as Police Commissioner, but it was seen as a vast break from the mould. This proclamation was hugely popular with Nova Terran citizens, who responded by protesting with an unprecedented level of peace, with just two violent interactions between patrolling police or military forces, the perpetrators of which were both handed over to police voluntarily by Protest Leaders and Organisers. The protests grew in size, and began to include labour strikes as well, with an estimated 62 % of Adult Nova Terrans joining protests and walking out of jobs. Through the whole event, Sylviana gave two daily protests, indicating industries that must report for work the following the proceeding day, to avoid the complete breakdown of social and economic services in Nova Terra, as well as dictating areas that were off limits for protests the following day. Largely due to his respect for the protesters, protest and strike leaders universally respected his conditions, and acquiesced to his stipulations. Di Sala Serana also became a large voice of inter-mediation, acting as the Police Co-Superintendent as well as a Nova Terran herself, and helped keep the police in line and Nova Terrans informed on police behaviour with regards to the protest. Sylviana and di Sala Serana's actions were despised by the Roman Senate, at this time controlled by Dracula Philips Davis' KF Posse, who were intentionally trying to gut any power the Provinces may have, out of fear of an uprising. Although Legal Experts considered Sylviana's actions within his rights as Commissioner, the Senate drafted an action that would order the Governor of Nova Terra to order Sylviana to react with military action and suppress any protests. It passed 5 days into the protests, now being called the "Nova Terran Crisis" by Davis & the KF, but Galus Caristia Opullas, the Governor of Nova Terra, was fearful of the huge amount of Nova Terran Political Will behind the protests, and issued an official apology to the Senate two days later, declaring that his position as Governor did not give him the right to direct the actions of any Commissioners that had been directly appointed by the Consul, which the Commissioner of Police and Military Operations was. Davis was, unbeknown to most, trying to undermine Consul Lucius Rufus Brutus' popularity through hugely unpopular actions designed to be perceived as having been orchestrated by Brutus, including these new tax laws. By directly linking Sylviana and Consul Brutus, Opullas had unintentionally made Consul Brutus hugely more popular with those in all provinces who despised these new taxes, many of whom had begun to see Nova Terra as an example of their frustration and hatred for their Colonial Ruler. Consequently, Davis was furious with Opullas as well as Sylvania for undoing his work against the Consul. He drafted a Senate Ruling recalling Opullas and Sylvania on Treason Charges, but found that, despite controlling the largest political posse in the senate, his minority rule made it difficult to pass such a controversial Ruling. However, after 6 more days of political finagling, he managed to play the members of the recently split PP Posse (Now the DNS and DFH) against each other and passed the Ruling with the assistance of DFH Senators Valerie Tatiana Sabina and Lyle Norse Johnson. The Ruling was passed on the 14th day of the Crisis, but The New Roman Military Officials in Sinitola, conflicted between their commitment to the Consul (as Opullas had so kindly associated with Sylvania) and to the Senate, and so refrained from doing anything more severe than setting up blockades surrounding the Governor's Palace, and declaring government buildings as "off limits to protesters." On the 16th day of the crisis, Protest Leaders raised their demands from simply the removal of the new taxes, adding full citizenship to their list of demands (Colonial subjects lacked many of the rights of Iselian Citizens). Davis privately communicated to KF Senators that he was done being "reasonable" and was now ready to use force to eliminate the mounting threat of the Protesters' movement. On the 17th day of the crisis, Davis circumvented Consul Brutus, as well as the proper Senatorial procedures and ordered the Praetorian Guard to arrest Opullas, Sylviana, di Sala Serana and Doman Ciusacius Alicis (The General of the Nova Terran Legions). The Praetorian refused to accept Davis' Bypass of the Consul, though, and reported the order to him. Brutus, unaware of the extent of Davis' efforts to undermine him, acquiesced to Davis, hoping to appease the Senator and buy himself favour with the current Senate Leadership. On the 18th day of the Protests, Praetorian Helicopters descended on Civitas Murata. di Sala Serana evaded capture, and attempted to convince Sylviana to join her, however his trust in the New Roman Political System to defend him against accusations of Treason outweighed di Sala Serana's understanding of reality, and he refused to leave. While giving his daily evening broadcast, he was tackled by Military Operatives from the Praetorian Guard, and placed under arrest. The Praetorian ordered the protests to break up immediately, and issued a 5 minute ultimatum for protests to disperse. However, many of the protesters were completely unaware of this change in policy, and did not disperse. At 5:37 in the Evening of the 18th day of the Protests, the Praetorian Guard began to dispense tear gas on the crowds via helicopter, and began to gun down protesters. The shooting lasted until roughly 9:30, with civilian fatalities as high as 643 by some counts. The Following Day, di Sala Serana appeared again, breaking into the offices of a Television Broadcast Station, where she made a call to arms of all Nova Terrans, and all Romans, to stand against the injustice and murder that had just been carried out against the Nova Terran People. After her Broadcast, Violent Riots broke out in the streets of Civitas Murata, and firefights began to take place all over the city. Huge portions of the Nova Terran Legion & Police Force, many of whom were disgusted with the Praetorian's actions, joined rioters as the city descended into chaos. The Praetorian, unused to close quarters firefights, typical for New Roman Troops, initially suffered high casualties, losing upwards of a 50 of their 600-strong force in the first three hours after di Sala Serana's broadcast. She personally led a group to the Governor's Complex, where Opullas, Sylviana & Alicis were being held, in an attempt to free them. The group - made up largely of her colleagues from the Armed Response Unit & other Soldiers, outnumbered the Praetorian Guards 2:1, and made huge progress through the complex in a quick period of time. Unfortunately for them, by the time they reached where the three leaders were being held, they had already been executed. Autopsy Reports noted at least 7 bullet wounds on each of the men, as well as multiple gashes, easily identified as having been made by the standard issue New Roman Army 6-inch knife that nearly every soldier (and certainly every Praetorian) was issued. di Sala Serana recovered their bodies, and quickly retreated, hoping to leave the compound before Praetorian Reinforcements arrived. She didn't succeed, though, and her group suffered major casualties before escaping, and lost control of the bodies of the three executed Romans. Throughout the day, hundreds of Rioters & Praetorian Guards died. Best estimates placed the total death count at 456 Rioters (Labelled Militants by Roman Sources) and 137 Praetorian Guards. Through the day, the Praetorian Guards managed to press a large number of Regular Soldiers into fighting on their side, and by the end of the day, the "Militants" had all either fled the city, been arrested, killed, or gone into hiding. di Sala Serana, now Enemy #1 of the Praetorian, fled the city.

Sinitolan Liberation Army (SLA)

After the Nova Terran Crisis, and the subsequent execution of almost all "Militants" taken prisoner by the New Roman Military, di Sala Serana knew her fate was sealed, and decided to double down and fight not just for better status for Nova Terra within the NRR, but Independence from the NRR entirely. She came into contact with Octavia Silenus, a wanted Sinitolan Independence Fighter & Leader of the only notable Sinitolan Rebel Group. Although Silenus was herself not a soldier she had been the most notable writer & thinker on Sinitolan Rebellion in the earliest days after the Roman Colonisation. di Sala Serana agreed to join Silenus, who was calling her movement "Forum for Sinitolan Freedom" at the time, as the organisation lacked any sort of combat capabilities, personnel, or knowledge. di Sala Serana believed that a military intervention would be the only way to rid Sinitola of the Romans, suggested that the organisation take a more combat-focused stance. Silenus was initially sceptical, but as news of di Sala Serana joining the organisation spread, Sinitolan civilians, Police Officers, & Sinitolan members of the Roman Army began to join the organisation in quantities previously unknown to Silenus. Seeing these changes, Silenus came to agree with di Sala Serana, and they began to refer to themselves as the Sinitolan Liberation Army (SLA). Silenus appointed di Sala Serana as the General of the SLA, and they began to work against Roman Rule in Sinitola
